TIPS ON HOW TO UPGRADE A BATHROOM WITHOUT REPLACING ALL THE TILES

Deborah Garth

Complete bathroom and kitchen renovation can be very rewarding but is it not always practical to replace fittings that are NOT as old or tiles that were installed not too long ago.

In our Zambia project we were faced with really hard decisions about what to keep and how to complement the “old” with the “new”. The “old” bathroom was done not too long ago yet we desired a paired down and calmer look. The marriage here had the desired effect and we were able to create a beautiful space without having to replace all the tile work.

Here are a few tips to consider for a bathroom upgrade without renovating the entire space.

  • Don’t ignore the existing tiles or counter tops but rather find pieces and hardware that is complementary to the current items.

  • Be careful when pattern is involved. It is never a good idea to combine more than one pattern without giving it plenty of consideration. In this case we had to keep the current curvy pattern and decided to tone it down with the addition of a subway tile.

  • The existing tile looks a lot more like an accent wall now that the plain subway tile is installed.Source good quality taps and hardware to upgrade the space. When you have a strong focal point like the pattern on existing tile, it is important to carefully choose other items that would be simple enough yet have a strong enough presence to stand the test of contrast presented here.

  • Lighting is very important, as always. Strategically placed lighting can enhance the look and feel in the bathroom.Matching accessories can make all the difference in the world in terms of creating unity and flair in the bathroom.

  • When we speak of matching we have to keep in mind not only the colour but also the shape of fittings.Create a harmonious colour palette that is soothing yet clean and fresh. It is always a good idea to use accent colour sparingly and in ways that can easily be changed.

  • Plan for and install enough storage space for everyday items to be tucked away. It just looks better not to have loads of products on display. Get a fancy tray to display unique and good looking items like perfume, hand wash and an air cleansing pot plant.

  • Mirrors can easily look dated so it is advised to replace old mirrors with new ones. A single large ceiling to counter mirror looks a lot more modern than 2 or 3 smaller mirrors.

  • Choose window treatments to compliment the space. For a clean look with low maintenance, it is advised to go for shutters or blinds.Dirty grout is a sure downer in old bathrooms. Take the time to clean all grout or go as far as replacing it to give it a nice fresh look.
